LGBTQIA2S+ Older Adults in Oregon: Understanding Strengths and Responding to Challenges  

Join Brandy Penner, Executive Director of the Oregon LGBTQ+ Aging Coalition, for an update on the evolving landscape of LGBTQ+ aging in Oregon. This session will explore recent legislative and policy developments, emerging initiatives to improve services and supports, and the Coalition's growing efforts to ensure LGBTQ+ older adults can age with dignity, safety, and belonging. Participants will also learn about current challenges, opportunities for advocacy, and practical strategies for creating more inclusive aging services across Oregon. This presentation will cover: 
  • Introduction to the work of the Oregon LGBTQ+ Aging Coalition
  • Who are LGBTQIA2S+ older adult populations (identities and issues) 
  • Key challenges and disparities faced by LGBTQIA2S+ older adults
  • Regulatory related requirements and protections, including SB 99
  • Creating a welcoming environment for LGBTQIA2S+ older adults
  • What the Coalition is working on for 2026-27
  • LGBTQIA2S+ older adult resources 

Presenter:

Brandy Penner (she/her) is the Executive Director of the Oregon LGBTQ+ Aging Coalition, where she advances equity and inclusion for LGBTQ+ older adults across Oregon. With a background in Sociology and Social Work, she has served as an elected official, community organizer, and advocate, leading efforts to improve services for LGBTQ+ older adults. She currently serves on multiple advisory bodies and the Portland Community College Board of Directors, reflecting her deep commitment to community and systems change.

Intended Audience: 

This presentation is appropriate for all professionals working with older adults, whether in a long-term care or health care setting or a community center. It is also appropriate for educators, researchers, and students in the field of gerontology, sociology, social work, public health, and health sciences, and for anyone who is interested in learning about how to support LGBTQ+ older adults.

  • Non-members: $15
  • Non-member seniors and registrants with limited financial means: $5

OGA is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. Events and donations are our main sources of income to fund our educational and networking programs.
